Season 7 of The Rookie premieres Tuesday, January 7, at 10 p.m. ET on ABC. The new season introduces higher stakes as the LAPD deals with two escaped criminals, one of whom has a personal connection to Officer John Nolan (Nathan Fillion).
The official trailer teases intense action as the team tackles dangerous fugitives, including Jason Wyler (Steve Kazee), the ex-husband of Nolan’s wife, Bailey Nune (Jenna Dewan). As the LAPD works to apprehend them, Bailey’s safety comes into question, raising the emotional stakes for Nolan.
Amid the action, the trailer hints at lighter moments and romantic developments. Nolan’s sense of humor is on display during an unconventional chase, while fan-favorite duo Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) and Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) share a steamy moment, leaving viewers curious about their next chapter.
Returning series regulars also include Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, and Mekia Cox. While ahead of the seventh season Tru Valentino left the series fans will be introduced to two new characters. Deric Augustine joins as Miles, a transfer from Texas who, despite having two years of experience, is still considered a rookie at the LAPD. Additionally, Patrick Keleher will portray Seth, a character whose inability to make quick decisions could pose challenges in his new role as a police officer.
ABC is also developing a new spinoff for The Rookie franchise. Created by Alexi Hawley, the untitled series will follow a male police officer navigating a major life transition in Washington state. Hawley, alongside Nathan Fillion, Michelle Chapman, and Bill Norcross, will executive produce the project, co-produced by Lionsgate Television and 20th Television.
This marks the second spinoff following The Rookie: Feds, which starred Niecy Nash-Betts as Simone Clark, the oldest rookie at the FBI Academy. Though Feds ended after one season, it expanded the universe of The Rookie and explored fresh perspectives on law enforcement.
Since its debut in 2018, The Rookie has remained a strong performer for ABC and a streaming favorite on Hulu, amassing over 500 million viewing hours.
