MANSA, the entertainment studio and streaming platform co-founded by David Oyelowo and Nate Parker, is expanding its original microdrama slate into AI-driven world-building with They Left Us to Die, a 30-episode zombie survival thriller premiering Friday, October 30 on the MANSA app and TikTok Minis.
The series was produced using generative AI technology, with digitally created characters and environments developed under the creative direction of MANSA’s production team. The project does not feature performances by live actors, though each episode went through a human-led production process, including editing by professional editors. Parker described the approach as a deliberate IP development strategy: using AI tools and predictive rendering to build out a full story world, test it with real audiences, and demonstrate to financiers that viewer demand exists before committing to a live-action production.
Set in South Los Angeles, They Left Us to Die follows Imani Cross, an emergency room nurse trying to protect her 16-year-old brother after a deadly outbreak leads federal authorities to seal off the city’s poorest neighborhoods and abandon residents to fend for themselves. When her brother becomes infected, Imani discovers her blood can reverse the virus, making her a target for federal authorities, a biotech corporation, and the leader of a fortified enclave sheltering the wealthy. With help from a former soldier who defies orders to protect her, Imani fights to survive while uncovering a darker secret: she was the sole survivor of an experimental drug trial conducted on children in her community 14 years earlier. The series blends zombie horror with themes of medical exploitation and inequality, told in the fast, cliffhanger-driven format typical of microdramas.
MANSA’s framing of AI here as a pre-production testing tool, rather than a replacement for traditional filmmaking, lands at a notably sensitive moment for the industry, where AI-generated content and its relationship to performer labor remains an active point of tension following recent union negotiations over AI protections. Positioning the technology specifically as a way to prove audience demand before greenlighting live-action work, with the actual production still passing through human editors and creative direction, reflects an attempt to thread that needle directly.
They Left Us to Die is available now on the MANSA app and TikTok Minis.
