Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin Strike Deal with Netflix for Faith-Based Films Starting With ‘R&B’

Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin's 'R&B' Marks Netflix Faith-Based Film Venture

Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin are joining forces to produce faith-based films under a new agreement with Netflix. This multi-year, multi-picture first-look deal expands on Perry’s existing creative partnership with the streaming giant, which began in October 2023.

The collaboration will see Perry and Franklin producing films under Tyler Perry Studios’ banner. The first project announced under this agreement is “R&B,” a contemporary retelling of the Ruth and Boaz love story from the Bible. Set against the backdrop of Tennessee, the film follows a young woman’s journey as she navigates life, love, and family while caring for an elderly widow.

In a joint statement, Perry expressed his excitement, saying, “I’m so excited to be working with DeVon on this and future projects. I think in this polarizing world, and at a time where the world seems to be growing colder every day, we both share the common goal of wanting to spread some good. And there’s no better place than Netflix.”

Franklin added, “Tyler and I have been great friends for over 15 years, so when he called me to team up on movies that can uplift the human spirit, I jumped at the chance and we couldn’t have a better partner than Netflix to help us inspire the world.”

Perry’s upcoming projects with Netflix include “The Six Triple Eight,” featuring Kerry Washington, and the drama series “Beauty in Black.” Franklin’s recent successes include “Flamin’ Hot,” directed by Eva Longoria, and “Miracles From Heaven,” both resonating with audiences for their inspirational themes.

The move underscores Netflix’s ongoing strategy to collaborate with established talents like Perry and Franklin while expanding its repertoire of faith-based content. With this partnership, viewers can anticipate more compelling stories that resonate with diverse audiences worldwide.

Both Perry and Franklin are represented by top agencies, underscoring the industry’s enthusiasm for this dynamic collaboration. The announcement marks a significant step in Netflix’s commitment to delivering impactful and inclusive entertainment experiences to its subscribers.
