Elsbeth has added Uzo Aduba, Tyne Daly, and Christine Ebersole to its Season 4 cast. Ebersole joins in a recurring role as Elsbeth’s mother, while Aduba and Daly will each guest star. The fourth season of the CBS crime drama, a spinoff of The Good Wife and The Good Fight, premieres Thursday, October 8, with new episodes airing weekly.
Aduba will play Allegra Miller, a proud New Yorker fighting developers to keep her home and change her life forever. She’s best known for playing Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren on Orange Is the New Black, a role that earned her two Emmy Awards, and for winning another Emmy playing Shirley Chisholm in Mrs. America. Her additional credits include The Residence, Netflix’s limited series Painkiller, and Pixar’s Lightyear.
For Aduba, the role adds another guest turn to a career built largely on sharply drawn, specific characters rather than recurring franchise work, continuing a pattern of her taking on distinct one-off roles across prestige drama, limited series, and animation rather than settling into a single ongoing series.
Daly will play Helen Adler, a dedicated birder unafraid to ruffle feathers when her flock is threatened. A six-time Emmy winner, Tony winner, and American Theatre Hall of Fame inductee, she’s best known on television for playing Detective Mary Beth Lacey on Cagney & Lacey. Ebersole’s character is described as able to charm anyone except her own daughter; the two-time Tony winner has appeared in Is This Thing On?, Bob Hearts Abishola, Licorice Pizza, and The Wolf of Wall Street. Carrie Preston returns as Elsbeth, the unconventional attorney working with the NYPD to track down New York’s most entitled murderers.
Elsbeth is produced by CBS Studios and executive produced by Robert King, Michelle King, Jonathan Tolins, Liz Glotzer, Erica Shelton Kodish, Bryan Goluboff, Gail Barringer, and Leah Nanako Winkler.
With three high-profile guest stars joining in a single season premiere, the bigger question is whether Elsbeth continues leaning into prestige one-off casting as its signature move, or whether any of these roles signal a longer-term presence on the show.
