OWN is spotlighting the trailblazing all-Black women’s volleyball team that made history on the national stage.
We Belong Here: The Story of Team Dream premieres on OWN Saturday, September 26 at 9 p.m. ET/PT as part of the network’s OWN Spotlight documentary series. Directed by Bianca Barnes-Williams, the film chronicles the journey of 12 Black women who came together in 2018 with limited practice time and an unwavering belief in one another to compete in the USA Volleyball Open National Championship, becoming the first all-Black women’s professional volleyball team in the process.
Led by NCAA champion Haley Eckerman, the team also includes players Khat Bell and Kaz Brown among its roster. Told entirely through the voices of the women themselves, with no external narrator, the documentary shares their own account of breaking barriers in a sport where representation has historically been limited, while also confronting the systemic challenges they faced along the way.
“Team Dream’s origin story is a powerful reminder of what happens when Black women step into their strength together,” said Tina Perry, President of OWN. “The way these women united shows their power, their joy, and their unwavering belief in one another, which embodies the spirit of OWN Spotlight. We can’t wait for audiences to hear their story in their own words as we celebrate the legacy they started and continue to build.”
We Belong Here: The Story of Team Dream previously premiered at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival. The documentary is produced by Bunim/Murray Productions, a Banijay Americas company, for OWN.
