Whitney Peak is the latest to join Universal’s Miami Vice ’85, the highly anticipated reimagining of the classic 1980s television series directed by Joseph Kosinski. Peak joins a cast that already includes Michael B. Jordan, Austin Butler and Alden Ehrenreich in the IMAX film set for release on May 19, 2028.
Peak is set to play Tubbs’ love interest, with Jordan playing Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs and Butler playing James “Sonny” Crockett, the two swagger-strutting detectives at the center of the story. Ehrenreich recently joined the cast following his Tony Award win in June for his role in Becky Shaw.
The film explores the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami in an all-new version of Miami Vice, inspired by the pilot episode of the landmark Universal Television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking. Unlike Michael Mann’s 2006 modern-day adaptation starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, this version is a stylized period piece rooted in the original show’s era. The screenplay is written by Dan Gilroy, based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich, with an earlier draft by Eric Warren Singer.
The original Miami Vice series, created by Anthony Yerkovich and executive produced with Michael Mann, starred Don Johnson as Sonny Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Rico Tubbs. The show ran on NBC from 1984 to 1989 and became one of the most culturally influential television series of its era, shaping fashion, music and filmmaking throughout the decade. Mann returns as executive producer on the new film.
Peak, who is Ugandan and Canadian, broke through with her leading role in the Gossip Girl reboot and most recently starred in the Netflix shark thriller Thrash opposite Phoebe Dynevor, which reached number one worldwide within 24 hours of its April release. She will next be seen as Lenore Dove in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, arriving in theaters November 20.
Miami Vice ’85 is produced by Dylan Clark and Kosinski, who previously directed Top Gun: Maverick and F1. Production is set to begin later this year in New York and Miami.
