Aaron Sorkin is back in the world of Facebook. Sony Pictures has dropped a new trailer for The Social Reckoning, Sorkin’s companion piece to his Oscar-nominated The Social Network, and it is darker, sharper and more urgent than anything the original film promised.
More than 16 years after David Fincher’s The Social Network introduced audiences to the origins of Facebook, Sorkin returns to write and direct a story rooted in the real-life events behind the Wall Street Journal’s explosive “Facebook Files” investigation. The film follows Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison), a young Facebook engineer who enlists the help of journalist Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White) to blow the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets, setting off a chain of events with consequences neither of them fully anticipated.
The new trailer wastes no time establishing the stakes. Jeremy Strong’s Mark Zuckerberg is a far cry from Jesse Eisenberg’s portrayal in the original film, trading any trace of awkward charm for something colder and more calculated. A standout moment sees Zuckerberg being coached on how to nod like a human being, a detail both funny and deeply unsettling. Bill Burr also appears, telling Zuckerberg to his face that he has become like a crossing guard blithely allowing traffic to plow into schoolchildren.
The film stars Madison, White and Strong alongside Wunmi Mosaku, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, Bill Burr and more.
