The official teaser for A Beauty Supply in Queens has been released ahead of its world premiere at the 2025 American Black Film Festival. The short film will screen as part of the prestigious HBO Short Film Award Showcase on Wednesday, June 11 at 7:30 PM at the New World Center in Miami Beach.
Led by a diverse ensemble cast that includes Caroline Chikezie, Clem Cheung, Princess Adenike, Paul Wang, Angella Katherine, Angela Chew, Queensly Ajibola, Keisha T. Fraser, Andrew Hsu, Natividad Alemany, Celia Au, Khoa Nguyen, and the Diop siblings Ayaan, Alaia, and Ase, the film brings to life a deeply personal and culturally resonant story.
Set in Queens, New York, A Beauty Supply in Queens follows Nigerian mother Ms. Aji and her daughter Tobi as they struggle to keep their beauty supply store afloat in the face of sabotage and relentless competition from nearby shops. At its core, the film explores themes of legacy, resilience, and community within Black immigrant families in America.
The short is directed by Oluseyi Olatujoye, co-directed and written by Princess Adenike, and produced by Adenike, Caroline Chikezie, Oluseyi Olatujoye, Queensly Ajibola, and Shalom C. Obiago.
Created as a proof-of-concept for a potential limited series, A Beauty Supply in Queens marks the first step in expanding this true story—based on Adenike’s own family—into a broader narrative that uplifts underrepresented voices and experiences.
Following its in-person debut, the film will also be available to stream digitally via ABFF Play, the American Black Film Festival’s official platform.
