Abraham Popoola has been cast as a series regular in the upcoming live-action series ‘Spider-Noir’, set to air on MGM+ and Prime Video. Based on the Marvel comic ‘Spider-Man Noir’, the series was initially titled ‘Noir’ but has been renamed to emphasize its connection to the Spider-Man universe.
The series, produced by Sony Pictures TV, is helmed by executive producers and co-showrunners Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot. ‘Spider-Noir’ will follow an aging and disillusioned private investigator, played by Nicolas Cage, who must confront his past as the city’s sole superhero. Set in a noir-inspired version of 1930s New York, the show blends the gritty aesthetics of the era with an iconic superhero narrative.
Popoola will portray a World War I veteran seeking an opportunity to get ahead. He joins a cast that includes Lamorne Morris as dedicated journalist Robbie Robertson, Li Jun Li as a singer at a premier New York nightclub, and Brendan Gleeson, whose role remains under wraps but is rumored to be the show’s villain.
Harry Bradbeer is set to direct and executive produce the first two episodes. Uziel and Lightfoot developed the series with the team behind ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’, including Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal, who also serve as executive producers. ‘Spider-Noir’ will debut domestically on MGM+’s linear channel, followed by a global release on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories.
Popoola’s recent work includes his role as Casca Decius in Netflix’s sci-fi film ‘Atlas’. He is set to appear in the upcoming ‘John Wick: Ballerina’, slated for release on June 6, 2025. His television credits include ‘Slow Horses’ for Apple TV+, ‘The Rig’ for Amazon, ‘The Curse’ for Channel 4, and ‘Andor’ and ‘Extraordinary’ for Disney+. Popoola has also appeared in films like ‘The Marvels’, ‘Cruella’, ‘Morbius’, and ‘Jingle Jangle’.
The official logline for ‘Spider-Noir’ describes the series as telling the story of an aging, down-on-his-luck private investigator in 1930s New York, who must grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero. With a stellar cast and a unique blend of noir and superhero elements, ‘Spider-Noir’ promises to be a captivating addition to the Marvel television universe.
