The witches are rising. FX has set Thursday, September 24 as the premiere date for the 13th season of American Horror Story, airing at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on FX and Hulu and streaming globally on Disney+.
Among the returning faces are Angela Bassett and Gabourey Sidibe, two fan favorites whose return has sent the AHS fandom into overdrive. Bassett has been a franchise cornerstone since Season 2’s Asylum, going on to appear in Coven, Freak Show, Hotel and Roanoke, earning Emmy nominations along the way. Sidibe first joined the anthology in Coven, playing the unforgettable Queenie, a role that made her one of the most beloved characters in the franchise’s history.
They join what is shaping up to be the most star-studded installment in the show’s run. Jessica Lange, the actress most synonymous with AHS having anchored the first four seasons including Murder House, Asylum, Coven and Freak Show, returns for the first time since 2018’s Apocalypse. Sarah Paulson, who has appeared in every season of the anthology since its debut, returns as Cordelia Goode, the Supreme of the Coven she first inhabited in Season 3. Evan Peters, another franchise pillar who appeared across nine seasons, is also back alongside Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd and Leslie Grossman. Newcomers to the franchise include Ariana Grande, John Waters, Paul Anthony Kelly and Joey Pollari.
American Horror Story first premiered on FX in 2011, created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk. The anthology format, in which each season tells a self-contained story with a largely rotating cast, became one of the defining television concepts of the decade. The show has been streamed more than 700 million hours globally across its 12 seasons, spanning stories set in a haunted murder house, a psychiatric asylum, a Salem witch coven, a traveling freak show, a haunted hotel and the apocalypse itself, among others.
The official logline for Season 13 teases the installment will “do justice to everyone’s most feared number,” promising the return of iconic horrors alongside new terrors for a cast reprising fan favorite roles. “Light your candles, draw your pentagrams and prepare for a supreme surprise,” it reads.
American Horror Story is created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, who executive produce alongside Ned Martel, Charlie Carver, Eric Kovtun, Nissa Diederich, Scott Robertson, Tanase Popa, Crystle Roberson Dorsey, Jennifer Salt and Tim Minear. The series is produced by 20th Television. All previous installments are currently streaming on Hulu.
