AnnaSophia Robb is set to join Will Smith in Supermax, the Amazon MGM Studios and Miramax thriller directed by David Gordon Green, Deadline has learned exclusively.
Robb will play Smith’s young partner as the two detectives enter the depths of a Supermax prison to solve a mysterious murder. Smith plays Rex, one of the lead investigators. The film is described as a twist-heavy, propulsive thriller and marks Smith’s return to a non-franchise studio feature outside of his long-running Bad Boys run.
The screenplay comes from David Weil and David J. Rosen, known for their work on the TV series Hunters and Invasion. Weil and Rosen also executive produce alongside associate producer Natalie Laine Williams. The Picture Company partners Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman produce alongside Smith and Adam Fishbach under his Westbrook banner. Amazon MGM closed a worldwide distribution deal valued at around $70 million to bring the film to Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories, bypassing theaters entirely. Production is targeting a mid-August start.
For Robb, Supermax adds to an already stacked slate. She next stars in the highly anticipated Peter Farrelly-directed biographical drama I Play Rocky, which is set to open this year’s Toronto International Film Festival and is already generating awards season buzz. She is also joining the recurring cast of Prime Video comedy Overcompensating for its second season, and is coming off rave reviews for her turn in Netflix’s Rebel Ridge opposite Aaron Pierre.
Green is reuniting with co-writer Rosen, who created the Apple TV series Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, which Green directed and executive produced. The project also has connective tissue with The Picture Company, which just wrapped production on co-writer Weil’s feature directorial debut Tyrant for Amazon MGM, starring Charlize Theron, Julia Garner and Demi Moore.
