Universal Pictures has officially dated Snoop, the highly anticipated biopic about hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg, for theatrical release on August 6, 2027. Outer Banks star Jonathan Daviss is set to star as Calvin Broadus Jr., the man who became one of the most influential figures in rap history.
Directed by Craig Brewer, known for Hustle & Flow and Song Sung Blue, the film is described as the definitive biopic of the artist, mogul and icon of gangsta rap. The screenplay was originally written by Joe Robert Cole and later revised by Brewer. The film will incorporate music from Snoop’s vast catalog, which includes some of the most recognizable records in hip-hop history including “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” “Gin and Juice,” “What’s My Name” and “Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang.”
Snoop marks the first project under Death Row Pictures’ overall deal with NBCUniversal Entertainment and Studios. The film is produced by Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, who previously produced 8 Mile, alongside Snoop Dogg himself and Death Row Pictures President Sara Ramaker.
Snoop Dogg teased the film at CinemaCon earlier this year, where he appeared on stage alongside Daviss. “After my brothers got to tell their story with Straight Outta Compton, now it’s my turn,” Snoop told the crowd. He also made clear what audiences can expect from the tone. “My movie is going to be rated R, I guarantee that. So get your parents’ permission.”
Universal has a proven track record with music biopics. Its N.W.A film Straight Outta Compton grossed more than $200 million worldwide and earned an Oscar nomination, while 8 Mile crossed $242 million globally. The studio also handled international distribution for Lionsgate’s Michael Jackson biopic Michael, which crossed $1 billion worldwide. Notably, Straight Outta Compton featured LaKeith Stanfield as a young Snoop Dogg, making Daviss the second actor to portray the rap legend on the big screen.
Snoop is currently targeting a summer 2026 production start and opens August 6, 2027.
