Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground to Go Independent After Netflix Deal Ends

Higher Ground Productions, the production company founded by Barack and Michelle Obama, is preparing to enter a new phase of independence after its long-standing partnership with Netflix comes to an end later this year.

According to multiple reports and comments made by former President Barack Obama at a recent History Channel event in Philadelphia, the company is transitioning away from its first-look arrangement with Netflix and moving toward a more flexible, multi-studio model.

Higher Ground was originally formed in 2018 with an exclusive overall deal at Netflix before shifting into a first-look agreement in 2024. Over the past eight years, the company has built a reputation for prestige storytelling across film, television, documentary, and children’s programming.

Its slate includes award-winning and critically recognized titles such as American Factory, Rustin, Leave the World Behind, Fatherhood, and the documentary Crip Camp. Collectively, Higher Ground projects have earned multiple Academy Award nominations and wins, along with Emmy recognition across several categories.

In addition to its Netflix collaborations, the company has increasingly expanded its reach across the industry, setting up projects with HBO, Apple, Amazon, FX, Disney, 20th Century Studios, and other major outlets—signaling a strategic shift toward a more decentralized production model.

The move toward independence reflects a broader change in Hollywood, where top-tier production companies are no longer tied exclusively to single streaming platforms. Instead, they are positioning themselves as studio-agnostic content creators, able to develop and distribute projects across multiple partners.

Higher Ground is also continuing its expansion beyond film and television into audio and stage productions, including podcasts and a Broadway revival of Proof.

As its Netflix deal winds down, the company is expected to continue collaborating with the streamer on select ongoing projects while actively pursuing new opportunities across the industry.

The Obamas’ next chapter positions Higher Ground not just as a production company, but as a fully independent creative studio operating across Hollywood’s evolving entertainment landscape.
