‘Idiots’ Trailer Drops: O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Dave Franco Lead Chaotic Comedy-Thriller

The first trailer for Idiots—the newly titled comedy-thriller formerly known as The Shitheads—has officially arrived, offering a glimpse into a wild, no-holds-barred ride led by O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Dave Franco.

Directed by Macon Blair, the film centers on two down-and-out men who find themselves at rock bottom. Franco plays Mark, an apathetic and reckless slacker, while Jackson portrays Davis, a deeply religious man striving to get his life together. Despite their opposing outlooks, the pair are forced into an uneasy partnership when they accept a questionable job escorting a troubled, wealthy teenager to rehab.

That teen, played by Mason Thames, quickly proves to be more than they bargained for. What begins as a straightforward transport gig spirals into a chaotic journey filled with shootouts, bizarre encounters, and unapologetically raunchy humor.

The film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, also stars Peter Dinklage, Kiernan Shipka, and Nicholas Braun.

Ahead of its theatrical release, the project underwent a title change, with distributor Independent Film Company opting for the more marketable Idiots. Still, the original title left an impression on the creative team. Blair previously shared that he became attached to The Shitheads early in development, recalling how the name stuck after first pitching it to producers. Franco added that the team expected pushback on the title but embraced its irreverent tone.

Following its Sundance debut, Idiots is set to open as the kickoff film for the Atlanta Film Festival before hitting theaters nationwide on August 28.

Early reactions describe the film as an absurd, high-energy descent into madness, blending outrageous comedy with unexpected moments of reflection—positioning it as one of the more unpredictable theatrical releases of the summer.
