Catalyst Studios has announced additions to the cast of their upcoming boxing drama, ‘Undercard,’ which stars Emmy Award-winning comedian Wanda Sykes in her first major dramatic film role. Joining Sykes are Bentley Green, William Stanford Davis, Xavier Mills, Estella Kahiha, Berto Colon, and Roselyn Sanchez. Principal photography for the film has commenced in Puerto Rico.
Directed by Tamika Miller, ‘Undercard’ centers around Cheryl “No Mercy” Stewart, a two-time former boxing champion and recovering alcoholic, played by Sykes. The story follows her as she tries to reconnect with her 20-year-old son Keith, portrayed by Bentley Green (‘Heist 88’). Keith, a talented yet troubled young man, has taken up boxing, following in his mother’s footsteps. When his gambling-addicted trainer abandons him, Keith turns to his estranged mother for help. Determined to make amends, Cheryl trains her son for a World Championship title fight, seeking redemption and a chance to repair their fractured relationship.

Co-written by Miller and Anita M. Cal, ‘Undercard’ draws inspiration from classic boxing films like ‘Raging Bull,’ ‘Million Dollar Baby,’ and ‘Creed,’ but offers a fresh perspective by telling the story through the eyes of the trainer.
Catalyst Studios Chairperson Holly Anderson Levow praised the film’s themes of resilience and the human spirit, emphasizing how it reflects personal struggles and triumphs. “This powerful, moving story is a metaphor for our own challenges. And it shows Wanda like we have never seen her before,” Levow stated.
Miller expressed her excitement about the cast, particularly highlighting Sykes’ dramatic potential. “I’m thrilled to have this amazing cast bring ‘Undercard’ to life, with Wanda leading the way in what I know will be a breathtaking performance,” she said.
The production team includes veteran producer Anne Clements, along with local producers Frances Lausell and Andres Ramirez, ensuring a strong production presence in Puerto Rico. Kim Coleman serves as co-producer, with Wanda Sykes also taking on the role of executive producer.
