Betty Gabriel (Get Out) and Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil) have been cast in Twilight of the Dead, an upcoming horror film directed by Brad Anderson (The Call, The Machinist).
This movie will be the final chapter in George A. Romero’s Living Dead series, marking the end of a franchise that redefined the horror genre and spawned countless spinoffs and remakes.
The story is set on a desolate tropical island, following a group of the last remaining humans as they struggle to survive amidst rival undead factions. Director Anderson has described Twilight of the Dead as a powerful and emotional take on the zombie apocalypse, inspired by stories like I Am Legend and The Road. “When I first read the script, I teared up at the end,” Anderson shared, noting the blend of horror and heartbreak he aims to achieve.

Romero’s estate has partnered with Los Angeles-based Roundtable Entertainment to bring this last piece of Romero’s vision to life. Before his passing in 2017, Romero had outlined Twilight of the Dead as the conclusion to his six-film series, which began with the groundbreaking Night of the Living Dead. Known for his unique ability to combine social commentary with horror, Romero saw this final film as a deeper exploration of humanity and survival.
Legendary makeup artist Greg Nicotero, who began his career working with Romero on Day of the Dead, will lead the makeup effects. Nicotero’s experience on The Walking Dead and his history with Romero promise a visually stunning and terrifying zombie experience.
Suzanne Desrocher-Romero, founder of the George A. Romero Foundation, expressed her enthusiasm for the project: “This is what the fans have longed for, and with Brad Anderson at the helm, it will be something truly special.” The production team, which includes Roundtable’s Sarah Donnelly and producer John Baldecchi, is equally confident that Twilight of the Dead will be a standout addition to the genre.
The film, slated for production in March, will be presented to buyers at the upcoming American Film Market. While Twilight of the Dead is intended as the final chapter, the producers hinted that there could be room for additional stories if this installment resonates with audiences.
With a script developed by Joe Knetter, Paolo Zelati, and Robert Lucas based on Romero’s original treatment, Twilight of the Dead is shaping up to be a memorable end to a landmark series.
