Lifetime is set to bring the inspiring story of 80s music icon Lisa Velez, famously known as Lisa Lisa, to the screen in the highly anticipated biopic Can You Feel the Beat: The Lisa Lisa Story. Slated to premiere on Saturday, February 1, at 8 p.m. ET, the film offers an intimate look into the life and career of the Puerto Rican singer who became a global phenomenon as part of Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam.

The network recently unveiled the film’s trailer, providing a glimpse into Lisa Lisa’s meteoric rise to fame and the personal battles she faced along the way. From a 15-year-old girl in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen with dreams of stardom to becoming the first Latina artist to top multiple Billboard charts, Velez’s journey is one of triumph over adversity.

Jearnest Corchado (Sneakerheads, Little America) takes on the role of the young Lisa Lisa, while Bre-Z (All American, Empire) stars as Toni Ménage, Lisa’s best friend and fellow artist. Radio personality Angie Martinez joins the cast as Nurse Rodriguez with Lisa Lisa also appearing in the film.

The trailer highlights the defining moments of Velez’s life, from her early struggles with racism and sexism in the music industry to her groundbreaking success with hits like “Can You Feel the Beat,” “All Cried Out,” and “Lost in Emotion.” However, the teaser doesn’t shy away from the darker aspects of her career, including a breast cancer diagnosis she kept hidden while continuing to tour.

“The music business isn’t going to be what you think it is. It’s going to try and take a piece of you,” Bre-Z’s character warns in a pivotal moment, encapsulating the challenges Lisa Lisa faced while navigating an unforgiving industry.

Directed by Tailiah Breon and written by Rebecca Murga, Can You Feel the Beat is part of Lifetime’s 2025 Voices of a Lifetime slate. The film is produced by Swirl Films and boasts a powerhouse team of executive producers, including Velez, Toni Ménage, Tracy “Twinkie” Byrd, Abbey Sibucao, Ron Robinson, and Eric Tomosunas. Matt Borlenghi, Maurice P. Kerry, Donny Carrington, Alijah Kai, and more star in the film.

Lisa Lisa’s story is not just about music; it’s about resilience, friendship, and breaking barriers in an industry that often tried to silence her. Speaking candidly in a 2024 episode of The Tamron Hall Show, Velez revealed how she managed her breast cancer diagnosis at the height of her career, hiding it even from her mother to keep working. “It was really, really hard,” she shared. “I didn’t know what to do, who to speak to. But I had bills to pay, and I kept going.”

The biopic will celebrate Velez’s extraordinary achievements, showing how she paved the way for Latinx artists in mainstream pop and inspired future stars like Selena Quintanilla and Jennifer Lopez. With a soundtrack that defined an era and a story that resonates across generations, Can You Feel the Beat: The Lisa Lisa Story is poised to be a powerful tribute to a true music legend.

Mark your calendars and get ready to feel the beat when the film premieres on Lifetime this February.
