For weeks, If I Go Will They Miss Me kept showing up on my feed. There were talkbacks, community screenings, and collaborations with people I already follow. The cast was out there pushing it. Posts announced which city the film was going to next. It didn't feel like a movie being sold to me. It felt like a movie looking for me. So when I read IndieWire's breakdown of how it reached $1 million, I wasn't surprised. I'd been watching it happen. I've also been paying attention to Rich Spirit, the company behind the release. They've only put out three films: The Apprentice, BLKNWS: Terms and Conditions, and now If I Go Will They Miss Me. That's a small slate, and it feels deliberate. They seem selective about the art they back and push out to the masses. If you've seen BLKNWS: Terms and Conditions, you know it's phenomenal (my review here). Now there's If I Go Will They Miss Me. What stands out isn't only the projects they choose. It's how intentional they are about rolling them out. If I Go Will They Miss Me is Walter Thompson-Hernández's first feature. It's about a boy in Watts trying to reach his father after his father comes home from prison. Rich Spirit picked it up at Sundance and opened it on one screen in Los Angeles. In five weeks of limited release, it grossed more than $1 million at the domestic box office. It never played on more than about 250 screens, and it spent well under $1 million on marketing. It's now available to watch at home, for rent or purchase on iTunes, YouTube, Amazon, and Fandango. IndieWire calls it a template for the smallest indies. I think it's bigger than that. We Keep Aiming at Everybody Hollywood's playbook is simple: open wide, spend big, and hope people show up. Marketing budgets keep growing, and big releases now spend close to their production budgets just to get noticed. But money isn't the real problem. The industry has lost track of where specific audiences actually are, so it pays to reach everyone just to reach someone. Indies don't have that kind of money to burn. When they try the same playbook anyway, you can see what it costs. Exhibiting Forgiveness, a 2024 Sundance film made for a similar audience, went the traditional route. According to Box Office Mojo, it opened in 774 theaters, made $276,274 that weekend (about $356 per theater), and was down to 183 theaters a week later. It finished at $506,520. If I Go Will They Miss Me opened on a single screen and, according to The Numbers, made $39,186. It went on to earn about twice what Exhibiting Forgiveness made, on roughly a third of the screens. More screens didn't bring more people. Knowing where your people were did. They Came to Us Rich Spirit had a name for its approach: the Obama Strategy. When I read that, it made sense. You don't win a campaign by convincing everybody. You win by making sure your people show up. That's what this release did. It opened at AMC Century City in Los Angeles, the city where the film was shot and where its story lives, and it sold out shows. IndieWire reported that the second weekend brought in $336K. Then it went to Black communities in Atlanta, Houston, Charlotte, and Raleigh, cities theaters usually skip. Nobody there needed convincing. We just needed the film to come to us, and it did. The same thinking showed up online. The team handling the film's marketing reached out to pay me for a sponsored post, and when they did, I was ecstatic. Their approach told me they knew exactly where the audience was. What I took from it was that they saw my worth. They understood the value of my platform. That matters. Too often, films led by us and starring us leave out the media platforms that actually speak to the audience they're trying to reach. It's usually not because those platforms lack value. It's because someone on the marketing team doesn't understand it. This rollout worked with people who did, and that says something about Rich Spirit too: they partnered with teams who knew where to go and who to talk to. Booking a theater in Atlanta and partnering with a creator whose community overlaps with yours come from the same instinct: go where your people already are. An underserved audience isn't a small audience. It's an audience nobody has bothered to show up for yet. Community Carried It A film made for everybody reaches strangers. A film made for us reaches people who are already connected through family, church, the group chat, and the same timelines. Once it got into those spaces, it traveled on trust. People walked out of the theater in tears and told everyone they knew to go. No marketing budget can buy that. It comes from community, and you only earn it when the community feels the film was made with them in mind. Walter didn't come in as a stranger either. He'd spent years building a following as a journalist and author, and he was thinking about how to market this film before it even had a distributor. People already trusted his eye, so when this one showed up, they leaned in. The Numbers, Honestly I want to be practical here. The film grossed more than $1 million, and Rich Spirit paid close to $1 million for it, according to Variety's report this past March. And $1 million in ticket sales isn't $1 million in the distributor's pocket. But the theatrical run was never supposed to cover everything. Its job was to build demand, and that demand now carries into home viewing. Rich Spirit estimates more than 5 million people know about the film through social media, far more than bought a ticket. Many of those people can now watch it at home. What It Taught Me I don't know exactly what inspired them to release it this way. I just know what it looked like from my feed. Before I ever saw a box office number, it already felt like the one film this year that put first the audience it knew would show up. In 2026, everything feels like a sales pitch: every brand, every release, every post. So it means something to feel like somebody made something with you in mind. That's my biggest takeaway. Too often it feels like filmmakers don't trust their gut on how to market their work, or who to market it to. There seems to be an assumption that the traditional Hollywood way is the right way, so they aim at the whole world and hope it finds its audience. Meanwhile, the people who would have been there no matter what never even hear about it. I don't believe the Hollywood way is the only way. Your marketing should be as creative as your project and as deliberate as your audience deserves. Some people forget that even when you can count on an audience to show up, that audience still needs to feel wanted. Wanting us there and expecting us there are two different things, and we can feel the difference. People showed up for the story and the performances, yes. But they also showed up because the film kept appearing on their feeds, from people and places that looked like them. Every collaboration and partnership pointed back to the same community. It felt like it was made for us. If you want us to spend our money, we want a real connection. I think that's why Rich Spirit is winning. They understand how to market a project that's inherently us. A film like this is for everyone, but we're the ones who will show up first, even when others never see it because all they see is us on the poster. Rich Spirit didn't treat that as a limitation. They treated it as the starting point. If I Go Will They Miss Me did it in the right order. Go where you're loved. Go where you're supported. Let those people fill the seats, carry the story, and tell everyone they know. Then go wider. The story matters, but it only travels when you take it to the people who want to hear it. For years, small Black films were treated as risky bets with limited audiences. The audience was never the problem. The problem was a system that never bothered to come find us. This film came and found us, and we showed up.
