Craig Robinson is set to play a villainous role in Toad, an upcoming comedy feature directed by Adam Rifkin and produced under the Laugh Factory Presents banner. Filming for the psychedelic road-trip comedy is scheduled to begin in February.
Inspired by cult classics like Cheech and Chong’s Up in Smoke, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Toad follows the chaotic journey of two slackers, Sam (James Paxton, Twisters) and Alex (Oliver Wyman, Feeling Randy). The duo is tasked with transporting a box of psychedelic toads from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. However, when the toads suffer heatstroke in the desert, Sam and Alex’s attempt to revive them inadvertently exposes them to hallucinogens, launching them into a surreal and comedic adventure.

Robinson will portray Charles, a charming yet intimidating crime boss who entrusts the delivery of the toads to the bumbling Sam and Alex. When the pair fails to make their Vegas deadline, Charles and his henchmen step in to retrieve the precious cargo, adding another layer of chaos to the story.
Director Adam Rifkin expressed his excitement about Robinson’s casting, stating, “Craig Robinson is not only a comedy genius, but he’s also the nicest guy in the world. Which is why I’m all the more excited for him to play our villain. I can’t wait to see that adorable smile of his turn dark. It’s an honor to be working with such a funny and talented guy on this extremely important movie.”
Robinson added, “I love Adam Rifkin movies and I love toads. The fact that the script is hilarious, and the cast is stellar didn’t hurt either.”
Producer Michael P.J. Gerstein shared, “The whole production team is absolutely elated Craig has signed on to our project. Toad is elevated by his participation, and this movie is going to knock people’s socks off.”
Laugh Factory President David Fuhrer emphasized Robinson’s significance in launching the Laugh Factory Presents banner. “Craig Robinson is the perfect talent to bring this unforgettable villain to life. With his unmatched charisma and comedic brilliance, Toad is destined to be the funniest movie ever. We’re beyond excited to have him help launch the Laugh Factory Presents banner.”
Robinson, best known for his role as Darryl Philbin on The Office, has an extensive comedy resume, including Hot Tub Time Machine, Pineapple Express, and This Is the End. His recent projects include My Spy Eternal City with Dave Bautista and the upcoming The Bad Guys 2 from DreamWorks Animation.
Toad marks the first feature film produced under the Laugh Factory Presents label, led by Fuhrer, Head of Entertainment John Weiser, and Laugh Factory founder Jamie Masada. Producers include Brad Wyman (Monster), Michael P.J. Gerstein (Last Train to Fortune), and Mike Kolko. Calum Gray, from the newly formed UK company Architect, will handle worldwide sales, with Mark O’Sullivan of DLNQNT serving as executive producer.
The psychedelic comedy is set to bring bold visuals, absurd humor, and a standout performance by Robinson as it prepares for production early next year.
