Tyler Perry Shares Update on Third Installment of ‘Why Did I Get Married?’

Tyler Perry Addresses Rumors About Third Installment of ‘Why Did I Get Married?

Tyler Perry has put the brakes on conversations about a third installment of his Why Did I Get Married? franchise, despite earlier teasing the possibility.

Perry had previously sparked excitement by sharing a glimpse of a script titled Why Did I Get Married Again? on social media. The post featured an image of his computer screen showing what appeared to be the script’s first page, reigniting hope among fans of the original films.

However, during a recent visit to the Sherri show, Perry expressed doubts about moving forward with the project. When asked about the sequel, he said, “I don’t think so. I want to, but there’s a lot of logistics to try and get it together, so we’ll see.” While he didn’t entirely dismiss the idea, Perry made it clear that coordinating schedules for the ensemble cast, including his own, remains a significant challenge.

The Why Did I Get Married? series, which debuted in 2007, explores the lives of four couples navigating their marriages during a retreat. The ensemble cast includes Janet Jackson, Jill Scott, Tasha Smith, Sharon Leal, Perry, Richard T. Jones, Malik Yoba, and Michael Jai White. The first film was a box office hit, earning over $55 million, and its 2010 sequel, Why Did I Get Married Too?, added $60 million, bringing the franchise’s total earnings to over $115 million.

Previously the cast members have fueled speculation about a third film through playful social media posts. It began with Richard T. Jones, who played Mike, posting a humorous video on October 18 that referenced a memorable scene from the first movie where his character forces his wife Sheila (Jill Scott) to drive alone to their couples’ retreat. The post went viral, prompting responses from Scott, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, and Sharon Leal, who all joined in the fun by reprising their roles in lighthearted Instagram posts.

While Janet Jackson, currently on her “Together Again” tour, and Malik Yoba, whose character Gavin died in the sequel, have not participated in these exchanges, the playful posts from the remaining cast members have only intensified calls for a third chapter in the series.

Meanwhile, Perry has been busy with other projects. His latest film, Divorce in the Black, a relationship drama-thriller starring Meagan Good and Cory Hardrict, has received critical acclaim. He’s also gearing up for the release of his new Netflix series Beauty in Black on October 24 and the World War II drama The Six Triple Eight, debuting December 20.

If Why Did I Get Married Again? does come to fruition, it would mark another milestone in Perry’s career, continuing his legacy of creating stories that celebrate Black love, relationships, and resilience. For now, fans will have to stay tuned for updates as Perry focuses on his packed schedule and ongoing projects.
