Daniel Ezra Exits as Series Regular in “All American” For Season 7

In a surprising turn for fans of “All American,” Daniel Ezra, who has portrayed Spencer James since the show’s inception, will not return as a series regular for the upcoming seventh season. While Ezra steps back from his leading role, he will continue to be a vital part of the show’s universe, making guest appearances as confirmed by The CW.

The announcement follows the recent airing of Season 6’s 13th episode, “Victory Lap,” where viewers witnessed a significant milestone for Spencer James. The episode features Spencer’s NFL draft day, culminating in a dramatic time jump that showcases his Super Bowl performance and subsequent engagement to Olivia Baker, played by Samantha Logan. The final two episodes of the season will delve into Spencer and Olivia’s wedding plans, providing a fitting closure to Ezra’s journey as a series regular.

The decision for Ezra’s departure was mutually made with showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll before the production of Season 6 commenced. This move was driven by creative considerations rather than budgetary constraints, debunking earlier speculations about financial cuts impacting the series.

Reflecting on his departure, Ezra expressed his gratitude and fulfillment in portraying Spencer James. “After making the difficult decision to leave ‘All American’, my sole focus became completing the journey of the most life-affirming character I’ve ever played in the manner he deserves. Thanks to Nkechi and the writers, I got my wish. Season 6 is ‘Spencer’s goodbye.’ I’ll miss him. I’ll miss our cast and crew. I hope it’s been as fun to watch him as it has been to play him,” Ezra shared.

Nkechi Okoro Carroll also praised Ezra’s significant contribution to the show. “Partnering with Daniel Ezra over the last six seasons to bring Spencer’s story to life has been such an amazing, fulfilling experience. Daniel truly is a gift and brought so much to the character on and off the field. And while Spencer has achieved his NFL dreams, I’m grateful Daniel will still remain an important part of this family, both in front of and behind the camera as we step into a new, exciting chapter of ‘All American,'” Carroll said.

Ezra’s involvement with “All American” has been multifaceted. Beyond his on-screen presence, he directed several episodes, including the notable 100th episode titled “100%,” which aired in May. His departure marks the end of an era for the show, which has consistently been The CW’s most-watched series, produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Studios.

As the series transitions into its next chapter, viewers can expect new characters to emerge, ensuring the continuation of the dynamic storytelling that has defined “All American.” The executive production team, including Carroll, Greg Berlanti, Jameal Turner, Sarah Schechter, Mike Herro, and David Strauss, remains dedicated to maintaining the show’s high standards and exploring new narratives within its established universe.
