Danny Ramirez is the latest to join the growing cast of Universal Pictures’ Miami Vice ’85, directed by Joseph Kosinski. His role has not been disclosed.
The film is the latest adaptation of the landmark NBC series that originally ran from 1984 to 1990, following two undercover Miami detectives in pastel suits navigating the glamour and corruption of South Florida’s drug trade. Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas originated the roles of Sonny Crockett and Rico Tubbs on the small screen, with the series going on to influence everything from fashion to filmmaking. Michael Mann brought the franchise to the big screen in 2006 with Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, and now Kosinski, coming off Top Gun: Maverick, takes his own approach.
Miami Vice ’85 is set strictly in the mid-1980s and inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the original series. Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan stars as Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, the role originated by Thomas, while Oscar nominee Austin Butler steps into the role of James “Sonny” Crockett, originated by Johnson.
Alden Ehrenreich, Camila Morrone and Whitney Peak round out the previously announced cast. Peak is unconfirmed but widely reported to be playing Jordan’s love interest. Morrone’s chemistry tests with Butler reportedly led to her casting, suggesting she may be playing a role connected to Crockett.
Ramirez recently wrapped production on Todd Haynes’ De Noche opposite Pedro Pascal and Baton, which he also wrote and directed. He will next be seen in Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday.
The film is produced by Dylan Clark and Kosinski, with a script by Dan Gilroy based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich. The film will be shot for IMAX and is set for release on May 19, 2028, with production beginning later this year.
