David Jonsson to Star in Frank Ocean’s Untitled Directorial Debut

Frank Ocean is stepping behind the camera for his directorial debut, and he’s tapped David Jonsson to lead the film. The untitled project has officially begun filming in Mexico City, though plot details remain under wraps.

Jonsson has been making waves in both film and television, recently earning critical acclaim for his co-lead role in Alien: Romulus alongside Cailee Spaeny. The rising British actor first caught Hollywood’s attention with Rye Lane, a Sundance hit that later scored a BAFTA nomination for Outstanding British Film.

The industry is taking notice—Jonsson landed on Variety’s 10 Actors to Watch and The Hollywood Reporter’s Next Gen Talent lists in 2024. He’s also in the running for the EE BAFTA Rising Star Award, following in the footsteps of past winners like John Boyega and Lashana Lynch.

Jonsson’s star power is only growing. Up next, he’s set to appear in Wasteman with Tom Blyth and The Long Walk, a Stephen King adaptation opposite Cooper Hoffman. He’s also joining Sydney Sweeney in Scandalous, the directorial debut of Colman Domingo.

On the small screen, Jonsson recently led the BBC’s Agatha Christie adaptation Murder Is Easy and is best known for his breakout role as Gus in HBO’s Industry. His theater roots run deep as well—his performance in And Breathe earned him Best Actor at the Black British Theatre Awards.

As for Ocean, whispers about his move into filmmaking have been swirling for years. Back in 2022, reports suggested he was in talks with A24 and 2AM to bring his vision to life, with Bones and All star Taylor Russell rumored to be involved at one point. Whether that still holds remains a mystery.

Ocean, known for keeping fans on their toes, hasn’t dropped a full studio album since Blonde in 2016, though he’s teased music sporadically over the years. Whether this film signals a new creative chapter remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure—when Frank Ocean moves, the world pays attention.

Stay tuned for more updates as production unfolds.
