Deborah Roberts is stepping into the role of permanent co-anchor at ABC News’ “20/20,” following a long line of distinguished anchors like Barbara Walters, Hugh Downs, Diane Sawyer, Connie Chung, and Elizabeth Vargas.
Roberts is a seasoned contributor to the show, having dedicated 28 years to ABC News since her entry in 1995, under the guidance of the iconic Barbara Walters. In her new role, she will be co-anchoring alongside David Muir, a veteran of the series since 2013. Muir expressed his eagerness, noting that Deborah brings a unique blend of storytelling, unwavering commitment to truth, and a deep sense of humanity to her work.
In an interview with Variety, Roberts shared her excitement about her enhanced role, emphasizing how it solidifies her connection with the show’s team and its expanding viewership. She explained, “Once you have really planted yourself firmly into a program like this as I have over the years, you look for more,” adding, “you always feel like you have a little more ownership of a program, and more of a say in what it’s all about.”
Kim Godwin, the president of ABC News, commended Roberts as an exceptional journalist known for infusing her work with heart, authority, and integrity. Godwin highlighted that Roberts and David Muir embody the essence of “20/20,” serving as inspirations to the team and viewers worldwide.
Roberts’ appointment follows the departure of Amy Robach, who left ABC News amid a unique episode involving her relationship with colleague T.J. Holmes. Both previously co-anchored the daytime program “GMA3.”
While “20/20” has traditionally been associated with true-crime narratives similar to NBC’s “Dateline” and CBS’ “48 Hours,” it has expanded its content. In 2019, ABC News introduced two-hour versions of the show on Disney’s Hulu streaming platform. Additionally, ABC News is launching a new podcast called “20/20 True Crime Vault,” delving into the show’s archives and adapting episodes for audio audiences. The “20/20” team also produces numerous stand-alone specials annually, encompassing a diverse range of topics.
Janice Johnston, the executive producer of the newsmagazine, underscored the importance of reaching new audiences, stating, “The way you have a brand with legs is to keep finding that new audience.”
Roberts is known for her unwavering commitment to assignments, often being the first to arrive at crime scenes, work closely with investigators, and engage with affected families.
Throughout her tenure at ABC News, Roberts has contributed to various programs, including “Nightline,” “Good Morning America,” and “World News Tonight with David Muir.” She has also served as a substitute anchor for “Good Morning America” and a guest co-host on “The View.” Her work on the “20/20” special “Say Her Name: Breonna Taylor” earned her a Peabody Award.
Deborah Roberts’ new role marks a significant milestone in her career, having already achieved recognition with induction into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame in 2023 and multiple Emmy Awards for her coverage of national and international events.
