Denzel Washington Plays a Dying Ex-Cop in New Christopher McQuarrie Thriller

Denzel Washington will star in an untitled thriller directed by Christopher McQuarrie, greenlit by Amazon MGM Studios and Scott Stuber’s United Artists, Deadline reports exclusively. The film is set for an October 1, 2027 theatrical release, with production beginning in November in New Jersey.

Written by Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner, the thriller follows a former police detective serving a life sentence who’s diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Granted compassionate release with six months to live, he returns home to the estranged daughter he left behind and a grandson he never knew existed, hoping to make amends before his past catches up with him. The project was previously referred to internally as The Frame.

Washington’s involvement comes after his planned reunion with Antoine Fuqua on Netflix’s epic about Carthaginian general Hannibal was put on hold due to budget issues during pre-production. That pause freed him up to meet with McQuarrie, ultimately leading him to sign on to this project instead. For McQuarrie, the film marks a deliberate return to the crime genre that built his early career, through films like The Usual Suspects, The Way of the Gun, and Jack Reacher, after a decade largely spent directing the Mission: Impossible franchise alongside Tom Cruise, most recently 2025’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.

McQuarrie produces alongside Heather McQuarrie, Stuber, and Nick Nesbitt for United Artists, Joseph Restaino for Hungry Bull Productions, Reza Moheet and Norman Aladjem for Mainstay Entertainment, Katia Washington, and Tommy Harper. The film adds to an already packed United Artists slate under Stuber, which currently includes Lizard Music with Dwayne Johnson and Benny Safdie, a new Highlander starring Henry Cavill, Michael Mann’s Heat 2 with Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale, and The Mandela Catalogue with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment.

Washington recently returned to Broadway in Othello opposite Jake Gyllenhaal and starred in Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest. He’s next set to appear in Netflix’s The Take alongside Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones, also slated for 2027.

With production starting in just a few weeks and a cast still needing a lead actress to play Washington’s daughter, the next thing to watch is who joins him in a role that’s central to the emotional core of the story.
