FX has renewed Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s anthology series American Horror Story for a 14th season, announcing the news a week ahead of the Season 13 finale. It marks the show’s first renewal in nearly seven years; the series received a three-season pickup covering Seasons 11 through 13 back in January 2020, leading many to assume Season 13 would close out the franchise entirely.
The renewal follows AHS: 13‘s strongest streaming debut to date. The premiere episode landed on Nielsen’s Streaming Top 10 charts and represented Murphy’s biggest-ever launch on Hulu and Disney+. The season continues Thursday with episodes 11 and 12, building toward the finale on October 29, timed just ahead of Halloween, with new episodes airing at 9 p.m. ET/PT on FX and streaming the same time on Hulu.
Season 13 is structured as a crossover event set primarily in New York City, tying together timelines and characters from across the franchise’s full history through a central location called The Apollyon, a residential building connected to a portal to Hell in its basement. Since launching in 2011, American Horror Story has become FX’s longest-running hour-long series, earning more than 100 Emmy nominations and 17 wins, including acting awards for Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, and James Cromwell, across installments that have spanned a haunted murder house, a coven of witches, a traveling freak show, a haunted hotel, and the apocalypse itself.
The Season 13 cast includes Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe, Leslie Grossman, Joey Pollari, and Jessica Lange, alongside an expansive supporting ensemble featuring Orlando Jones, John Carroll Lynch, Tig Notaro, Mena Suvari, and John Waters, among many others. Murphy and Falchuk created and executive produce the series alongside Ned Martel, Charlie Carver, Eric Kovtun, Nissa Diederich, Scott Robertson, Tanase Popa, Crystle Roberson Dorsey, Jennifer Salt, and Tim Minear. 20th Television produces.
With the franchise’s crossover season already proving to be its biggest streaming success yet, the real question heading into Season 14 is whether Murphy and Falchuk continue building on that interconnected mythology or reset entirely with a fresh standalone story, as the series has done throughout much of its run.
