It has been a long wait, but Diarra from Detroit is finally back. Paramount+’s acclaimed drama returns for its second season, and the fan demand has been impossible to ignore. Creator, writer and star Diarra Kilpatrick and co-star Jon Chaffin sat down with Blex Media to talk about the show’s passionate fanbase, the complexity of their characters and what it means to build something that legends want to be a part of.
For those who need a refresher, Diarra from Detroit follows Diarra, a recently divorced Detroit school teacher who becomes entangled in a dangerous mystery after matching with a man on a dating app who subsequently goes missing. Equal parts thriller and dark comedy, the show became an instant favorite for its sharp writing, layered characters and its unapologetic centering of Black women’s experiences. Kilpatrick, who created, wrote and stars in the series, plays the titular Diarra. Chaffin plays Danger, a complicated and deeply human character whose wrong choices and right intentions make him one of the show’s most compelling figures.
Season 2 picks up with an ensemble that includes Shaniqua Shandai, Glynn Turman, Method Man, Morris Chestnut, Amber Riley, Lil Rel Howery and more, continuing the show’s tradition of casting legends who come not for the platform but for the work itself.
