Marvel has reversed course on Wonder Man. Despite announcing a Season 2 renewal in March, Disney+ has officially canceled the series, with sources confirming that a writers’ room for the second season was never opened and the show’s writers have been released to pursue other projects.
The cancellation is a notable reversal for a show that launched to strong critical acclaim. Season 1 debuted January 27 with all eight episodes, holding a 91 percent critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praised the chemistry between leads Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley, with Variety calling their performances “equally ridiculous and romantic.” The show drew 618 million minutes viewed in its opening week, landing at number eight among streaming originals for the week of January 26 through February 1, before falling off the charts the following week.
Abdul-Mateen II earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his work on the show, making him the only live-action actor to receive Emmy nominations for both a Marvel and DC project, having previously won for his role in HBO’s Watchmen.
The series followed aspiring Hollywood actor Simon Williams, played by Abdul-Mateen II, who crosses paths with veteran actor Trevor Slattery, played by Kingsley, and the two pursue life-changing roles in a superhero film remake, offering a comedic peek behind the curtain of the entertainment industry. The Season 1 cast also included X Mayo, Demetrius Grosse, Zlatko Burić, Arian Moayed and Olivia Thirlby.
The show was created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, with Cretton directing the first two episodes and Guest serving as showrunner.
While Wonder Man will not return for a second season, the characters remain part of the MCU and could appear in future Marvel projects. The cancellation aligns with a broader Marvel pattern. Nearly all of the studio’s live-action Disney+ series have been single seasons, with Loki being the rare exception to run two seasons.
