Prime Video has announced its upcoming NFL docuseries ‘Evolution of the Black Quarterback’ will premiere on September 24. The three-part series will be available to stream in over 240 countries and territories, exclusively on Prime Video.
Hosted by retired NFL Pro Bowl quarterback Michael Vick, ‘Evolution of the Black Quarterback’ explores the rich history, challenges, and impact of Black quarterbacks in the NFL. Vick takes viewers on a journey across America, highlighting the trailblazers who defied the odds and redefined the quarterback position. The series celebrates the progress made and looks forward to the future of Black quarterbacks in the league.
The documentary features in-depth interviews with some of the NFL’s most influential Black quarterbacks, including Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, Cam Newton, Dak Prescott, Russell Wilson, Donovan McNabb, James “Shack” Harris, Warren Moon, and Doug Williams. It also includes insights from other notable football figures and celebrities, such as Common, Deion Sanders, Larry Wilmore, Steve Young, Josh Allen, and Jamie Foxx.
Directed by FredAnthony Smith and produced by SMAC Productions in association with NFL Films and Fubo Studios, the series is executive produced by Michael Strahan, Constance Schwartz-Morini, and FredAnthony Smith. The docuseries aims to not only honor the legacy of these athletes but also shine a light on their ongoing contributions both on and off the field.
‘This project is incredibly personal to me,’ said Michael Vick. ‘As a former quarterback who was told I couldn’t play this position, it’s inspiring to see how far we’ve come. I want to give credit to those who paved the way, like Randall Cunningham, Steve McNair, and Donovan McNabb, and show the impact of the dual-threat quarterbacks who are changing the game today.’
The release of the series is timely, as discussions around racial barriers in the NFL continue. Despite strides made by players like Mahomes and Jackson, recent studies show that Black quarterbacks are still often underrated in the draft, indicating ongoing challenges.
