The limited series, which also stars Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor and Mo McRae, premieres July 15
Apple TV has unveiled the first trailer for Lucky, its highly anticipated limited series starring and executive produced by Anya Taylor-Joy, and it sets up a propulsive cat-and-mouse thriller with one of the most impressive ensemble casts of the year.
Based on Marissa Stapley’s New York Times bestselling novel and Reese’s Book Club pick of the same name, the series follows Lucky Armstrong (Taylor-Joy), a con artist raised in a criminal life by her father, played by Timothy Olyphant. When a multi-million-dollar heist goes sideways, Lucky is forced to go on the run, pursued simultaneously by the FBI and a ruthless crime boss.
That crime boss is Priscilla, played by Annette Bening, who the trailer reveals is also Lucky’s mother-in-law. Their reunion is one of the trailer’s best moments. “Hello dear, it’s been a while,” Bening’s Priscilla says coolly. “Where’s my son?” When Lucky claims not to know, Priscilla presses further. “Where’s my money?” Lucky admits she does not have it. “That’s the wrong answer,” comes the reply.
The ensemble also includes Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Mo McRae, Drew Starkey, Clifton Collins Jr. and William Fichtner.
Lucky is created, co-showrun and executive produced by Jonathan Tropper, with Cassie Pappas serving as co-showrunner. Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter executive produce for Hello Sunshine, with Taylor-Joy also producing through her banner LadyKiller. Jonathan van Tulleken directed the pilot and serves as executive producer.
The series premieres globally on Apple TV with the first two episodes on Wednesday, July 15, followed by new episodes every Wednesday through August 19.
