Netflix Drops Teaser Trailer for Mara Brock Akil's Drama Series 'Forever'

Netflix has unveiled the first teaser for Forever, its upcoming drama series from Mara Brock Akil, starring Michael Cooper Jr. and Lovie Simone. The teaser debuted during the streamer’s Next on Netflix 2025 presentation, offering a first glimpse into the reimagining of Judy Blume’s influential—and once-controversial—1975 novel.

Set in Los Angeles in 2018, Forever follows the epic love story of two Black teens, Keisha Clark (Simone) and Justin Edwards (Cooper Jr.), as they navigate romance and identity while being each other’s firsts. The modern adaptation brings a fresh perspective to the novel’s themes, exploring love, intimacy, and self-discovery through a contemporary lens.

Joining Simone and Cooper Jr. in the series are Karen Pittman, Wood Harris, Adriyan Rae, Xosha Roquemore, and Marvin Lawrence Winans III. The ensemble also features Barry Shabaka Henley, Ali Gallo, Niles Fitch, Paigion Walker, and E’myri Crutchfield in recurring roles. With this talented lineup, Forever brings together a dynamic mix of established and rising stars to bring the modern adaptation of Judy Blume’s novel to life.

Mara Brock Akil, who developed the series under her Netflix overall deal, serves as showrunner and executive producer. Judy Blume, the novel’s author, also executive produces alongside Susie Fitzgerald, Erika Harrison, Sara White, Reina King, Regina King, Shana C. Waterman, and Anthony Hemingway. Hemingway, known for his work on Genius: Aretha and Power Book II: Ghost, directs four episodes and serves as an executive producer. Regina and Reina King are also credited as directing one episode each.

With Brock Akil at the helm and Hemingway’s dynamic storytelling, Forever is shaping up to be a bold and heartfelt adaptation of a beloved classic. Watch the first teaser above.
