Gina Torres is going from high heels to high boots.
Gina Torres joins 911: Lonestar as a series regular for its second season. 911: Lone Star is a spin-off of the original Fox hit 9-1-1, which is based in LA and starring Angela Bassett. The spin-off is based in Austin, Texas.
Gina Torres joins 911: Lonestar as Tommy Vega. Her introduction to the series is based on the current COVID-19 pandemic. Vega is a once prolific paramedic captain who called it quits eight years earlier to raise her two twin daughters. Now, with the COVID-19 pandemic forcing her husband’s restaurant out of business, Vega is getting back in the saddle and is re-entering the workforce to support her family. Though it breaks her heart to be apart from her little girls, Tommy will show the world that no matter how much time has passed, when she puts on that uniform, she’s still a boss.”
This new gig will also reunite the actress with showrunner Tim Minear whom Torres worked with on the sci-fi classic Firefly in 2002.
“We are so excited to be expanding our 911-verse with the addition of Gina Torres,” said Minear. “I’ve been dying to write for her again ever since Firefly. Gina brings warmth, intelligence, and command to everything she does. 2020 is finally looking up.”
Minear previously told TVLine that “I feel like you have to address” the global health crisis on emergency procedurals like 9-1-1 and its spinoff. He added that “you can’t really ignore it.”
911: Lone Star to resume filming this fall. The series is scheduled to premiere in early 2021.
Torres starred in Firefly and then on Suits as Jessica Pearson for seven season. She later left the series to led her own Suits spin-off Pearson. In that series, she reprised her role for 10 episodes before it was canceled after one season. She was also slated to lead ABC’s vampire soap Brides, playing one of the three brides of Dracula. However, the project did not move past the pilot stage.
