Grantham Coleman and Tony Danza are joining Starz’s Power Book III: Raising Kanan season 3. Danza’s character was introduced in the season 2 finale while Coleman will join season 3 in a key role capacity.

The Power prequel series comes from creator and showrunner Sascha Penn. It takes viewers back to the ’90s and the early years of the now-deceased Kanan Stark, portrayed in Courtney Kemp’s original series by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. The series tells the origin story of Kanan Stark, and his entry into the criminal world through his mother, who ruthlessly runs the family’s drug empire.

Season 1 saw a teenage Kanan eager to get on board his family’s illegal business, however, he is left second-guessing his life’s purpose by the end of the season after he shoots a police officer, Detective Howard, who unbeknownst to him is his biological father. The second season saw the return of Kanan to New York after fleeing to Boston in the previous season. And the second season ended with a dramatic cliffhanger.

In Power Book III: Raising Kanan season 3 we will meet Ronnie Mathis (Coleman), Unique’s older brother, who was recently released from prison. Ronnie’s stoic demeanor belies a shocking ruthlessness. It’s not that Ronnie’s immoral, it’s that he’s amoral, conscienceless, unyielding and vindictive.

And Danza’s character Stefano Marchetti, the Godfather of New York City’s mafia scene, was introduced in the season 2 finale. He’s a major character for Raising Kanan season 3 and was introduced as Kanan (Mekai Curtis) was making some significant growth in the drug trade, which he was indoctrinated into by his family as led by his ruthless mom Raq (Patina Miller). Raq in season 2 was dominating the drug business in Queens. Marchetti is the most powerful man in New York City as far as the mafia drug scene is concerned. He decides what goes where and who gets what, and demands to be consulted by every drug retailer in the city, and anyone who chooses to do otherwise will face the music. With Kanan’s overtly ambitious mom ever determined to expand her territory, she could be facing a new enemy in Marchetti.

The series also stars Omar Epps, London Brown, Malcolm Mays, Hailey Kilgore, Shanley Caswell, Antonio Ortiz, Jo-Vaughn Scott, and Toby Sandeman

Production on season three of the family crime drama series has started in New York.
