Gugu Mbatha Raw Led Apple TV+ Series Surface Renewed for a Second Season

SURFACE SEASON 2

Apple TV+ is staying above the Surface with their new show. The Gugu Mbatha-Raw-led thriller Surface was renewed for for a second season just three months after its eight-episode first season.

Stephan James, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Ari Graynor, François Arnaud, and Millie Brady also star in the series created by Veronica West.

West wrote the series which centers on Mbatha-Raw as Sophie who is on a quest to rebuild her life after a suicide attempt, and her struggle to remember – and understand – everything that led up to the moment when she jumped. In the first season, set in San Francisco, Sophie seeks to rediscover herself, unearthing sins ranging from an affair to much deeper questions about a hidden past and her true identity.

In Surface, James portrays Baden, an undercover cop with a strong connection to Sophie. Baptiste is Hannah, Sophie’s therapist. Jackson-Cohen plays James, Sophie’s husband and a well-connected and successful partner at a venture capital firm.

Graynor is Caroline, an heiress and old friend of Sophie and James. Arnaud plays Harrison, a colleague and friend of James. Brady is Eliza, mysterious woman that connects to Sophie’s past.

The second season will shift the setting to Sophie’s hometown of London, where she’ll find out where she really came from and what made her into the flawed person she is. The mess she left behind in San Francisco, however, will catch up with her — something West hinted at following the season finale.

West is the showrunner of Surface and executive produces with Mbatha-Raw and Hello Sunshine’s Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter. Sam Miller, Kevin Sullivan, Jennifer Morrison and Tucker Gates were the season one directors.
