Warner Bros has won a fierce bidding war for the Maude v Maude package, a global action thriller featuring two iconic actresses, Angelina Jolie and Halle Berry, in lead roles.
While exact details are being kept under wraps, insiders describe the film as a “Bond vs. Bourne” type of movie. Roseanne Liang will direct the film from a script by Scott Mosier, while Berry and Jolie will also serve as producers through their banner HalleHolly. Jeff Kirschenbaum and Joe Roth will produce through RK Films, with Mosier and Liang executive producing.
The sale is a major coup for Warner Bros, with co-studio heads Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy reportedly keen to get more movie star-centric projects into their slate. The bid was aggressive, and shows that the studio is willing to compete with streaming giants like Apple and Netflix for top-tier projects.
It’s worth noting that while Berry and Jolie have been working in the film industry for over three decades, this will be the first time the two have worked together. However, both actresses are veterans of the genre, with Jolie having starred in action hits like Salt and Maleficent, and Berry having played Jinx in Die Another Day and featuring in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and the X-Men movies.
The Maude v Maude package is also a significant project for Scott Mosier, who got his start working with Kevin Smith on classic films like Clerks and Mallrats before moving into animation, where he co-wrote and produced the 3D-animated film Free Birds. Liang, meanwhile, is coming off the success of Shadow in the Cloud, which won the People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award at the 2020 Toronto Film Festival.
All in all, this is an exciting development for fans of action movies and these two talented actresses, who are sure to deliver unforgettable performances in Maude v Maude.
