Hulu Gives Series Orders to Ryan Coogler’s ‘X-Files’ Reboot, Led by Danielle Deadwyler and Himash Patel

Hulu has officially ordered Ryan Coogler’s reimagining of The X-Files to series, Deadline reports. As previously reported, the show stars Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as two FBI agents assigned to a long-shuttered division investigating unexplained phenomena, playing entirely new characters rather than versions of Dana Scully and Fox Mulder.

The series order caps a three-year development process that began when original creator Chris Carter revealed in a 2023 podcast that Coogler was planning to remount the show with a diverse cast. Coogler wrote, directed, and executive produced the pilot through his Proximity Media banner, part of his five-year exclusive television deal with Disney, which owns Hulu, 20th Television, and Onyx Collective.

As previously reported, the ensemble includes Amy Madigan, Steve Buscemi, Ben Foster, Devery Jacobs, Lochlyn Munro, Tantoo Cardinal, Joel D. Montgrand, and Sofia Grace Clifton, with Jennifer Yale serving as showrunner and Carter, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian executive producing alongside Coogler.

The project arrives as Coogler’s most high-profile work since Sinners, which earned a record-setting 16 Oscar nominations and won four awards, including Best Original Screenplay for Coogler himself. With the series now formally moving forward, this marks a concrete commitment from Hulu to a reboot that reworks a franchise built around two white leads into a story centered on new characters played by a Black woman and a South Asian man, a notable bet given how much of the franchise’s built-in audience remains tied to Mulder and Scully specifically.

With the pilot now officially greenlit to series, the next detail to watch for is a premiere date, and how Hulu plans to position the show against the weight of the original’s legacy.
