Jamie Foxx is stepping back into the ring—this time as a coach on a mission.
The Academy Award winner is set to lead Fight for ’84, a new sports drama at Netflix that was just announced during the streamer’s 2025 Upfront presentation. Andrés Baiz (Narcos, Griselda) is attached to direct the film, which centers on one of the most heartbreaking—and ultimately triumphant—chapters in American sports history.
Set in the aftermath of the 1980 plane crash that tragically claimed the lives of the entire U.S. Olympic boxing team, the film follows a new coach (played by Foxx) tasked with rebuilding the squad from the ground up. Against the odds, he leads them to the 1984 Summer Olympics, where they go on to win the most boxing medals in U.S. Olympic history.
The screenplay comes from Oscar nominees Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton) and John Gatins (Flight), along with Andy Weiss (White Boy Rick).
Fight for ’84 is produced by Eric Newman (Griselda) for Grand Electric, Bryan Unkeless (I, Tonya) for Night Owl, and both Jamie Foxx and Michael W. Abbott for A Move Films Production. Executive producers include Andy Weiss (also producing for A WeBros Entertainment Production), Henry Tillman, and Datari Turner.
This marks another major collaboration between Foxx and Netflix. The actor recently returned to screens in the streamer’s action-comedy Back in Action with Cameron Diaz and also dropped his latest stand-up special, Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was… last year. Foxx also headlined Netflix’s sci-fi satire They Cloned Tyrone and the vampire flick Day Shift.
While this project marks his first time playing a boxing coach, Foxx is no stranger to the sport. He previously portrayed Muhammad Ali’s hype man Drew Bundini Brown in Michael Mann’s Ali opposite Will Smith.
With Fight for ’84, Foxx is stepping into a different kind of fight—one rooted in grief, resilience, and redemption. It’s not just a comeback story for the athletes. It’s a testament to legacy, loss, and the power of second chances.
No release date has been announced yet, but this one already feels like a contender.
