Netflix Renews ‘The Diplomat’ for Season 4—Before Season 3 Even Drops

'The Diplomat' Renewed For Season 3 Ahead of Second Season Premiere

Netflix is doubling down on The Diplomat. The political drama, created by Debora Cahn and led by Keri Russell, has officially been renewed for Season 4—even though Season 3 hasn’t premiered yet.

The announcement came straight from Netflix’s chief content officer Bela Bajaria during the streamer’s 2025 Upfront presentation in New York City. And it’s a bold vote of confidence in a series that’s already proven to be a breakout hit.

Season 3 is expected to debut this fall with Russell returning as U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler, alongside Rufus Sewell, Allison Janney, David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, Ato Essandoh, and Bradley Whitford, who joins the cast this season.

And if you thought Season 2 was messy, things are only getting more chaotic in Season 3. Kate’s accused the Vice President (played by Janney) of orchestrating a terrorist plot, admitted she’s gunning for her job—and now, with the President dead and Grace Penn sworn in as the new Commander-in-Chief, Kate is forced into a political spotlight she never wanted. Meanwhile, her husband Hal (Sewell) may have had a hand in the President’s demise, and he’s still determined to land Kate the VP seat. Political drama? That’s an understatement.

Created by The West Wing and Homeland alum Debora Cahn, The Diplomat has consistently delivered high-stakes storytelling layered with sharp dialogue and international intrigue. Its first season was a runaway success, racking up over 173 million hours viewed within four weeks of release and cracking the Top 10 in 87 countries. It also earned Emmy, Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice, and SAG nominations—cementing its place as one of Netflix’s top prestige titles.

Season 2 held its own too, spending four weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10.

With no official Season 3 premiere date just yet, fans will have to wait a bit longer to see how this next chapter unfolds. But with Season 4 already locked in, one thing is clear: Netflix is all-in on Kate Wyler’s tangled world of diplomacy, secrets, and power plays.
