Renowned artist Jean-Michel Basquiat is set to be the focus of an upcoming feature documentary titled “King Pleasure,” directed by Quinn Wilson, former creative director for Lizzo. Produced by Boardwalk Pictures, known for their work on “Pepsi, Where’s My Jet?” and “Women’s Sports League Group Athletes Unlimited,” the film promises to unveil an intimate and emotional portrait of the enigmatic artist.

The documentary has received the full support of Basquiat’s estate, granting access to a treasure trove of archival materials and original artworks. This unprecedented access will allow the film to present a unique mash-up of never-before-seen home movies, notebooks, photographs, animations, and insightful interviews, shedding new light on the artist’s life and creative journey.

Jean-Michel Basquiat, celebrated for his groundbreaking untitled painting of a black skull, which fetched over $110 million in 2017, remains a significant figure in the art world even after his passing. Last year, the Orlando Museum of Art made headlines after unveiling 25 paintings attributed to Basquiat, only to discover later that they were counterfeit. This new documentary seeks to reframe Basquiat’s legacy and correct the inaccuracies that have surrounded his life.

Basquiat’s artistic journey began in the graffiti scene of New York during the late ’70s, and he quickly emerged as one of the youngest artists ever to exhibit at the prestigious Whitney Biennial in New York. His friendship with iconic artist Andy Warhol further elevated his status in the art world. Tragically, Basquiat’s life was cut short in 1988 due to a heroin overdose, but his legacy as an electric and influential artist lives on.

Behind the scenes of “King Pleasure,” Basquiat’s sisters, Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux, alongside their stepmother, Nora Firtzpatrick, have played an integral role in curating the artist’s life and work. Their dedication and years of meticulous research have culminated in exhibitions, including the recent “Jean-Michel Basquiat: King Pleasure,” showcasing over 200 of his exceptional pieces in both New York and Los Angeles.

The documentary’s production team boasts a wealth of talent, with Quinn Wilson taking the helm as director. Wilson, who has previously collaborated with acclaimed artists such as Dita Von Teese, King Princess, and Ziwe, has expressed enthusiasm for unraveling a story that challenges the conventional understanding of the iconic artist. Through unseen artwork, thoughts, and memorabilia, “King Pleasure” aims to offer a fresh perspective on Basquiat’s life, not only as an artist but as a man.

President of Boardwalk Studios, Jordan Wynn, spoke with reverence about Jean-Michel Basquiat’s enduring impact, stating, “He left behind a body of work that continues to inspire and capture the imagination of people from all walks of life.” The Basquiat family’s decision to grant such comprehensive access to their personal collection speaks to the trust and significance they place in this documentary project.

The documentary, which begins production this summer, will be a significant addition to the growing repertoire of Basquiat-focused projects. Another in the works is a scripted limited series starring and produced by Stephan James, in collaboration with Boat Rocker Studios.

With the guidance of the Basquiat family and the exceptional storytelling prowess of Quinn Wilson, “King Pleasure” is poised to redefine the narrative surrounding the legendary artist, recentering his legacy and offering a poignant exploration of his life and profound artistic contributions.
