Jessica Frances Dukes Joins MGM+'s Limited Series 'Earth Abides'

MGM+ has announced Jessica Frances Dukes as the female lead opposite Alexander Ludwig in the limited series “Earth Abides.” The series, based on George R. Stewart’s classic sci-fi novel of the same name, is a fresh and imaginative take on the post-apocalyptic genre.

Dukes will portray Emma, a character diametrically opposite to Ludwig’s Ish. Described as fearless in both body and mind, Emma is set to become the driving force behind the new world they aim to construct. Her experiences with loss have instilled in her a profound understanding of the intertwined nature of life and pain, emphasizing the theme that our true essence is defined not by what we accumulate but by what we give away.

Created by showrunner Todd Komarnicki (“Sully”), “Earth Abides” explores a world devastated by an unprecedented plague that nearly obliterates humanity. As the remnants of civilization crumble, a handful of survivors must confront the looming specter of extinction.

Production for “Earth Abides” is set to commence on April 8 in Vancouver, with a planned premiere on MGM+ slated for late 2024.

The series boasts an impressive lineup of executive producers, including Oscar winner Michael Phillips (“The Sting”), Juliana Maio, and Kearie Peak. The writing team features talents such as Karen Janszen, Tony Spiridakis, Evan Hart, and Kyle Stephen. Bronwen Hughes is set to direct the pilot and episode 2, while Rachel Leiterman and Stephen Campanelli will helm subsequent episodes.

Dukes, whose credits include “Project Greenlight” and “Gray Matter,” both featured on Max, as well as a supporting role in the Paramount feature “Organ Trail,” is represented by Schachter Entertainment, Innovative Artists, and Schreck Rose Dapello Adams Berlin & Dunham.
