Jurnee Smollett to Lead Apple's "Firebug" Series Opposite Taron Egerton

Emmy nominee Jurnee Smollett is set to lead the cast of the new Apple Original drama series “Firebug.” The series, loosely inspired by events surrounding notorious California arsonist John Leonard Orr, will also feature Taron Egerton in a prominent role. Dennis Lehane, the acclaimed writer, has developed, written, and executive produced the project.

“Firebug” unfolds the narrative of a troubled detective and an enigmatic arson investigator (Egerton) as they embark on the pursuit of two serial arsonists. Smollett will portray Michelle, a rising-star detective, in this contemporary Pacific Northwest setting. The series takes inspiration from events documented in the truth.media’s Firebug podcast, which delves into the true story of Orr, a former fire captain and arson investigator convicted of being a serial arsonist and mass murderer.

In addition to his acting role, Egerton will serve as an executive producer alongside Richard Plepler, Dan Friedkin, Bradley Thomas, and Kary Antholis. The series is produced by Apple Studios and adds to their growing list of notable projects.

“Firebug” marks a reunion of the core team behind the Emmy-winning “Black Bird,” including Lehane, Egerton, Antholis, and executive producers Plepler, Friedkin, and Thomas. Marc Smerling will also executive produce for Truth Podcasting Corp, maintaining a connection to the podcast that inspired the series.

Jurnee Smollett’s involvement adds another layer to her impressive career, with notable roles in “Lovecraft Country,” “Lou” on Netflix, “Birds of Prey” on The CW, and more. Her portrayal of Michelle, a rising star detective, promises to bring depth to this thrilling drama set to captivate audiences on Apple TV+.
