Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o and Chloe Grace Moretz are set to star in the upcoming mixed martial arts drama “Strawweight.”
The film, marking James M. Johnston’s directorial debut, follows the intertwined paths of two fighters thrust into the UFC Octagon. The project was unveiled at the European Film Market by WME Independent and CAA Media Finance.
The narrative centers around a young woman (Moretz) whose life takes a transformative turn upon discovering her passion for UFC. Concurrently, a former champion (Nyong’o) is determined to reclaim her title by undergoing a reinvention. Both fighters share the common goal of earning respect, but only one can emerge victorious.
James M. Johnston, known for his work on projects like “The Green Knight” and “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints,” will direct the film. The script, crafted by Paul Harrill from a story by Johnston and Harrill, will see production by Lars Knudsen of Square Peg, David Lowery, and Toby Halbrooks of Sailor Bear, and Patrick Newall. UFC star Rose Namajunas, a former Strawweight Division champion, will act as a fight consultant and executive producer.
“Strawweight” promises a gripping exploration of the competitive world of mixed martial arts, with a stellar cast and experienced production team at its helm. The film is poised to be a noteworthy addition to the cinematic landscape, bringing the intensity of the UFC Octagon to the big screen. WME Independent and CAA Media Finance will jointly handle worldwide sales for the anticipated project.
