Mahershala Ali is linking up with filmmaker Bassam Tariq for Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, a new project under Amazon MGM Studios’ Orion Pictures. Tariq, who won the Berlin Film Festival’s Critics Award for Mogul Mowgli, will both write and direct the film.
Plot details are under wraps, but the project marks an interesting reunion. Tariq was originally set to direct Marvel Studios’ Blade reboot with Ali leading the charge as the titular vampire hunter. However, after a tumultuous production process, Tariq exited in 2022. Since then, Blade has seen multiple rewrites, director changes, and delays, leaving its future uncertain. Now, the two are finally collaborating again—but on a completely different kind of film.
Producing alongside Tariq are Lucan Toh and Babak Anvari of Two & Two Pictures, the company behind films like Asphalt City and The Front Room.
Ali, a two-time Oscar winner (Moonlight, Green Book), is coming off the success of Sam Esmail’s Leave the World Behind, which quickly became one of Netflix’s most-watched English-language films. Up next, he’s set to star opposite Scarlett Johansson in Jurassic World Rebirth, hitting theaters July 2.
Tariq’s resume spans both narrative and documentary filmmaking. Beyond Mogul Mowgli, he co-directed the acclaimed documentary These Birds Walk and helmed the pilot for Riz Ahmed’s upcoming Amazon series Quarter Life.
Meanwhile, Orion Pictures continues expanding its slate, with the studio recently making waves with Nickel Boys, the adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, which is up for multiple Academy Awards.
No release date has been announced for Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, but with Ali and Tariq back in the mix, it’s one to watch.
