Marla Gibbs is joining Grey’s Anatomy season 19 in a multi-episode guest arc. She is one of the many new faces we’ll see with this upcoming season.

Grey’s Anatomy season 19 will introduce a new group of surgical interns and with the interns, we’ll also meet their families. Gibbs will star as Joyce Ward, grandmother of one of the new residents, Simone Griffith (Alexis Floyd), who lives in Seattle. Gibbs, 91, will star in two episodes of the upcoming season.

Simone is described as a funny, whip smart, high achiever with a complicated family dynamic who grew up in Seattle, but never wanted to work at Grey Sloan because of a painful personal history with the hospital. Gibbs’ Joyce will likely shed light on both Simone’s family dynamic and history with Grey Sloan.

Floyd’s Simone is apart of the new first-year surgical resident class which includes Mika Yasunda (portrayed by Midori Francis) who is “used to being overlooked and underestimated.” Adelaide Kane will portary new resident Jules Millin, who, after being raised by “drug addled artist/hippies,” has emerged as the “only real grown-up in the family.”

Glee alum Harry Shum Jr. who will portray Daniel “Blue” Kwan, who is “generous by nature but competitive to a fault,” per ABC. His need to win has become heightened following a “family crisis.” And Niko Terho who will portray first-year surgical resident Lucas Adams.

Grey’s Anatomy season 19 will premiere on Thursday, October 6 at 9 p.m. ET. And Gibbs’ Joyce Ward will be introduced in Episode 1902 and will also appear in 1903.

This will be the second time Gibbs’ starred in an arc-role on a Shondaland drama, she also starred in the Grey’s Anatomy spinoff Station 19. Speaking of Station 19, 6eason 6 will return on Oct 6th at 8 p.m ET.
