Marvel Scraps Okoye-Led Spinoff starring Starring Danai Gurira

Canceled: Marvel Scraps Okoye-Led Spinoff—But Wakanda’s Fiercest Warrior Isn’t Done Yet

Wakanda’s fiercest warrior isn’t getting her own show after all. Marvel Studios has officially shelved the long-rumored Okoye spinoff series, leaving fans of the Dora Milaje general wondering what’s next for Danai Gurira’s beloved character.

Marvel’s head of streaming, television, and animation, Brad Winderbaum, broke the news during an interview with Pay or Wait. While confirming that the series is no longer in development, he did tease that Okoye will be back in some capacity.

“I love Okoye. I think fans of Okoye are going to be excited to see her come back,” Winderbaum said. “But I don’t think it’s going to be on a television show. I can’t say where or when, but I think there’s a lot to look forward to.”

Talk of an Okoye-led spinoff first gained traction in 2021, with reports that Gurira had inked a deal to reprise her role in a Disney+ origin series developed by Black Panther director Ryan Coogler. For years, Gurira herself has only hinted at the possibility. Back in 2022, when pressed about the project on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, she coyly said, “I have been told… that I can gently allude to this possibility.” But as time passed with no updates, hope for the series faded.

While Okoye’s solo adventure isn’t moving forward, Wakanda will still have a presence in Marvel’s upcoming slate. Eyes of Wakanda, an animated spinoff series, is set to hit Disney+ on August 6, 2025. The four-episode series will explore the history of Wakandan warriors tasked with retrieving dangerous vibranium artifacts from around the world. It also has a direct connection to the larger MCU, with Winderbaum calling it “a real treat” for longtime fans.

Despite the series cancellation, Okoye remains a significant part of the Black Panther legacy. First introduced in Black Panther (2018), she quickly became a standout, leading the Dora Milaje with precision, heart, and unwavering loyalty. In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Okoye found herself ousted from the Dora Milaje after failing to protect Shuri. She later donned the Midnight Angels armor, signaling a new chapter in her journey.

Where she’ll appear next is anyone’s guess, but given her fan-favorite status and Marvel’s ever-expanding universe, it’s safe to say we haven’t seen the last of Okoye. Whether it’s on the big screen or in another Disney+ project, Wakanda’s fiercest protector will be back—just not in the way we originally expected.
