Prime Video has unveiled the trailer for Elle, its prequel series to the 2001 classic Legally Blonde, and the younger version of Elle Woods is already giving us everything we need.
Set in 1995, the series follows a teenage Elle Woods, played by newcomer Lexi Minetree, long before she was making waves at Harvard Law. We meet her living her best life poolside in Bel-Air, until her father’s job situation forces the family to pack up and relocate to rainy Seattle. Trading California sunshine for Pacific Northwest gloom, Elle finds herself a very pink fish out of very grey water.
Created by Laura Kittrell (High School, Insecure) and co-showrun with Caroline Dries, Season 1 promises tricky friendships, forbidden romance, and the kind of questionable fashion choices that can only exist in the mid-90s. At the center of it all is Elle’s relationship with her mother, played by June Diane Raphael, with Tom Everett Scott rounding out the family as her father Wyatt. The supporting cast includes Chandler Kinney, Zac Looker, Jacob Moskovitz, Gabrielle Policano, and Amy Pietz, with recurring appearances from James Van Der Beek, Logan Shroyer, and others.
Reese Witherspoon, who originated the role and serves as executive producer through Hello Sunshine, has made no secret of her excitement. When she first saw Minetree’s audition tape, Witherspoon said simply: “Are we the same person?” She also confirmed the timing is intentional, with Elle premiering July 1 to mark 25 years since the original film hit theaters.
For fans already nervous about investing in something new, here is some reassurance: Prime Video has already renewed Elle for a second season before the first has even aired. All eight episodes of Season 1 drop July 1.
