Michael Che Sets October 13 Premiere for Third Netflix Special, Shot in Minnesota [TRAILER]

Michael Che is returning to Netflix with his third stand-up special, Shot in Minnesota, premiering October 13. Che directed the hour himself, taped at First Avenue in Minneapolis, and executive produces alongside Matthew Vaughan for Rotten Science. A newly released clip has Che taking aim at longtime Saturday Night Live co-anchor Colin Jost and Jost’s marriage to Scarlett Johansson.

Che has spent over a decade building his comedy career largely through SNL, where he returned behind the Weekend Update desk this season for his 13th consecutive year alongside Jost, making the two of them one of the longest-running anchor pairings in the segment’s history. Before landing at SNL, Che had a brief run as a correspondent on The Daily Show, and he’s since built out his own project history beyond the show, including creating and starring in the sketch series That Damn Michael Che, which ran for two seasons on HBO Max.

Che’s Netflix output has arrived on its own unhurried timeline, 2016’s Michael Che Matters, 2021’s Michael Che: Shame the Devil, and now this latest hour five years later, each one landing further apart than the last. For a Black comedian who’s spent his career inside one of the whitest and most historically insular institutions in American comedy, that pacing hasn’t come at the expense of range: between SNL’s writers’ room, his own HBO Max series, and now a third Netflix hour, Che has maintained a presence across network, streaming, and late-night formats that few Black comedians of his generation have sustained simultaneously.

In the released clip, Che jokes about the strangeness of Jost treating his marriage to Johansson as unremarkable, riffing on the idea of bringing his own dates to a dinner at the couple’s house. Netflix is leading its marketing with the Jost material, a clear play for Weekend Update’s built-in audience, though the special is expected to cover more ground than SNL-adjacent material alone.

Shot in Minnesota drops October 13 on Netflix, just weeks into SNL’s new season, with Che still splitting his attention between the live desk he’s held for over a decade and the stand-up career he’s built alongside it.
