Ruben Santiago-Hudson and Kara Young to Star in New Broadway Play ‘Mix and Master’

L-R: Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Kara Young, Dominique Morisseau, Kamilah Forbes

Ruben Santiago-Hudson and Kara Young will lead Mix and Master, a new play by Dominique Morisseau, coming to Broadway’s Todd Haimes Theatre. Directed by Kamilah Forbes, previews begin January 5, 2027, with opening night set for January 27 and the run closing February 28. Tickets are on sale now.

The play centers on the last record shop in the Bronx, where a rising DJ refuses to let the music die. As vinyl spins and tensions rise, what starts as a fight to save the shop turns into a deeper reckoning over legacy, survival, and what it takes to stay in the mix, all set to live hip-hop and jazz DJ sets woven through the performance.

Morisseau, a MacArthur Fellow, writes the play, with Forbes, executive producer of the Apollo Theater, directing. Roundabout Theatre Company produces.

Santiago-Hudson comes off a strong 2026, having starred as Bynum Walker in the Broadway revival of August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, a performance that earned him a Tony nomination, a Drama Desk Award, an Outer Critics Circle Award, and the Richard Seff Award. He also directed John Kani’s Kunene and the King at the Guthrie Theater last fall.

Young, meanwhile, has had an equally packed year, starring as Racine in the film adaptation of Is God Is, appearing in Boots Riley’s I Love Boosters, and stepping into Proof on Broadway opposite Ayo Edebiri and Don Cheadle. She won the Tony for Best Featured Actress in a Play for Purpose in 2025, making her the first Black performer to win in consecutive years in that category.
