Mississippi’s boldest Lieutenant Governor is back — and she’s got a new title to prove it.
Tyler Perry’s first Netflix comedy series is entering its second chapter with a brand-new name: Miss Governor. Formerly titled She The People, the series stars Terri J. Vaughn as Antoinette Dunkerson, a no-nonsense politician navigating messy family dynamics, relentless workplace politics, and her own journey to power.
The new name was unveiled during the Essence Festival, where Vaughn debuted the trailer for Miss Governor Part 2. And if the sneak peek is any indication, Antoinette is ready to stop playing nice and start making real moves — for herself and for the people.
What’s It About Again?
Part political satire, part family comedy, Miss Governor follows Antoinette after she wins her election as Mississippi’s Lieutenant Governor. But once in office, she quickly learns her victory speech was the easy part. From dealing with a sexist, old-school governor to keeping her family in line while living under the public spotlight, Antoinette has her hands full. And that’s before the ambulance gets called to the governor’s office at the end of Part 1…
Who’s in It?
The cast of Miss Governor blends familiar faces from the Tyler Perry universe with rising talent. Leading the charge is Terri J. Vaughn (Daddy’s Little Girls) as Antoinette Dunkerson, the newly minted Lieutenant Governor at the heart of the story. Joining her is Jade Novah (That’s My Jam) as her hilariously over-the-top sister Shamika Latavia Latoya Farrah Dunkerson, and Jo Marie Payton (Meet the Browns) as family matriarch Cleo. Dyon Brooks (A Naughty Christmess Story) plays Basil, while Drew Olivia Tillman (This Is Us) and Tré Boyd (House of Payne) portray Antoinette’s children, Lola and Titus Dunkerson. Karon Riley (Meet the Browns) stars as Michael, Antoinette’s love interest, and Robert Craighead (Too Close to Home) returns as the condescending Governor Irwin Harper. Rounding out the cast are Kevin Thoms, Tony Robinette, and several others who bring the political chaos and family comedy to life.
What Happened in Part 1?
Antoinette had a major glow-up. After constantly being dismissed and undermined, she finally took control of her narrative — hiring her own staff, publicly standing against a corrupt pipeline initiative, and checking the Governor on camera. Perry says it best: “Sometimes you just have to get to a point where you stand up and do it.”
But just as she finds her stride, chaos erupts in the Governor’s office and ends with folks yelling for an ambulance. What happened? We’ll find out soon enough.
Creative Team
Perry writes, directs, and produces the series alongside Niya Palmer (co-creator), Keisha Lance Bottoms, and Terri J. Vaughn herself, all of whom serve as executive producers. With Bottoms bringing real-life political experience and Vaughn leading the charge on screen and behind the scenes, the creative team is as powerful as the show’s lead character.
When Does Part 2 Drop?
The first eight episodes of Miss Governor are now streaming on Netflix. Part 2 — the final eight episodes of Season 1 — arrives August 14.
So go ahead and catch up, because this isn’t just political drama — it’s family, it’s funny, and it’s all about standing up for yourself, even when the system wants to keep you quiet.
