‘Molepeople’: LaKeith Stanfield Heads Into NYC’s Abandoned Tunnels in New Horror Film for Blumhouse

LaKeith Stanfield and Ben Mendelsohn are set to star in Molepeople, a new horror thriller co-financed and co-produced by Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Paramount Primal, with Paramount handling worldwide distribution, The Hollywood Reporter reports exclusively. Stanfield revealed the news himself during a Blumfest panel at New York Comic-Con, confirming a theatrical release date of August 27, 2027.

The film follows a man who descends into the abandoned tunnels beneath New York City and discovers a twisted society living beneath the streets. Rob Savage directs from a script by Nathan Elston, with production set to begin late November or early December in the UK. The project previously circulated in development with Anthony Ramos attached before moving under the Paramount Primal banner, Skydance’s genre label built around smartly budgeted projects with a distinctive point of view.

This marks Stanfield’s third project with Blumhouse, following a small role in The Purge: Anarchy and a key part in Get Out. His other horror credits include Death Note, Haunted Mansion, and the series The Changeling. Mendelsohn, meanwhile, is coming off the Venice Film Festival premiere of Company, directed by Casey Affleck.

Jason Blum produces for Blumhouse Atomic Monster alongside Paramount Primal heads J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, and James Harris, with Elston, Savage, Ryan Turek, and Tracy Rosenblum executive producing. Savage first drew attention for a viral lockdown-era short that led to his feature Host, and has since directed Dashcam, The Boogeyman, and this weekend’s Other Mommy. Blumhouse Atomic Monster’s catalog includes the Conjuring universe, Halloween, The Purge, Annabelle, Insidious, M3GAN, and Five Nights at Freddy’s, with the combined company topping $10 billion in worldwide box office since Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster merged in 2024.

With production starting before the end of the year and an August 2027 release date already locked in, the next details to watch for are who else joins the cast and what, exactly, is waiting for Stanfield’s character in those tunnels.
